EU Ecodesign Regulation
As of July 1, 2023, the European Union, the EEA, Turkey and Switzerland had stricter efficiency regulations for drive technologies according to the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/1781. These new regulations specifically affect the IE4 energy efficiency class and bring significant changes to our industry.
Although the regulation came to force in July 2023, as your reliable partner, we would like to remind you of these changes and the related product adaptations.
An Overview Of The New Requirements Energy efficiency class IE4 is now mandatory for all 3-phase induction motors in the power range ≥ 75 kW to ≤ 200 kW with 2, 4 or 6 poles. Exceptions are brake motors and explosion-proof motors. This tightening of efficiency requirements makes a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption and therefore to sustainability.
In addition, the following requirements continue to apply: • Energy efficiency class IE2 for explosion-proof 3-phase induction motors of protection class Ex eb with a rated power of ≥ 0.12 kW to ≤ 1,000 kW. • IE2 energy efficiency class for 1-phase induction motors with a rated power of ≥ 0.12 kW.

Our Answer To The New Challenges
To meet these new regulations and general market requirements, we have expanded our portfolio to include IE4 motors with IP55 protection. These motors cover a power range from 3 kW to 315 kW and are available in 2- and 4-pole versions. Of course you can choose between our standard and branded motors.
The current price list with the new motors is available on our service portal. In addition, these motors can now be selected in our configurators, which makes planning and ordering much easier for you.
Important Exemptions and Special Features
Certain applications are exempt from the Ecodesign Directive:
• Ambient temperatures above 60°C or below -30°C
• Altitudes above 4000 meters
• Motors intended for export outside the EU or EEA*
• Engines intended for use on non-EU flagged vessels*
• Motors specially designed for marine applications
*) Many Governments worldwide have imposed local Regulations, also known as MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) to numerous types of electric motors which require efficiency class IE3 or higher.
These motors are not CE marked and are therefore not subject to the new efficiency requirements. However, it is important to note that many governments around the world have local regulations (MEPS) that also require high efficiency classes (IE3 or higher).
Transitional Rules for Replacement Motors
Electric motors already installed can be replaced with 1:1 replacement motors until July 1, 2029. After that date, the new regulations also apply to replacement motors, provided that the original motors were delivered before July 1, 2023.
Scope of the Regulation
The Ecodesign Directive applies in the following countries:
• EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
• European Economic Area (EEA): European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
• Other Countries: Switzerland, Turkey.
The new efficiency regulations represent a great opportunity to do our part to protect the environment while reducing operating costs through lower energy consumption. We are proud to offer products that meet these high standards and look forward to working with you to shape the future of power transmission.
